HELPFUL NEED TO KNOW INFORMATION

At Krusty & Stokes Rescue Inc., we believe patience, understanding, and consistency are essential when bringing a rescue dog home. Many dogs need time to decompress and adjust to their new environment, which is why we encourage adopters and fosters to follow the 3-3-3 Rule as a general guideline during the transition period.

The 3-3-3 Rule

The 3-3-3 Rule is a helpful guideline that explains the adjustment period many rescue dogs go through when entering a new home. Every dog is different, but patience, understanding, and consistency are key during this transition.

The First 3 Days

Your new dog may feel overwhelmed, scared, nervous, or unsure of their new surroundings. During this time they may:

  • hide or seem withdrawn
  • have little appetite
  • sleep more than usual
  • have accidents indoors
  • test boundaries or seem anxious

Give them space, keep routines calm and consistent, and allow them to adjust at their own pace.

The First 3 Weeks

Your dog will begin settling into their new routine and may start to show more of their true personality. During this stage they may:

  • begin bonding with family members
  • feel more comfortable exploring the home
  • learn household expectations
  • become more playful and affectionate

This is an important time for building trust, structure, and positive reinforcement.

The First 3 Months

By this stage, many dogs start to fully decompress and feel at home. They begin building confidence, forming strong bonds, and understanding their new life and routine.

Remember:

  • trust takes time
  • consistency matters
  • every dog adjusts differently

Adopting a rescue dog is a journey, and patience can make all the difference in helping them feel safe, loved, and secure in their forever home.
